Top 5 Film & Television Apps on Android in South Africa Q4 2021

In Q4 2021, the performance of the top Film & Television apps on the Android platform in South Africa varied significantly. Here’s a closer look at the trends in downloads, revenue, and active users for each app, based on data from Sensor Tower.

Showmax 1.0 saw a notable increase in weekly downloads, which peaked at around 99.7K in the last week of December. Active users also grew steadily, reaching approximately 602K by the end of the quarter.

Netflix experienced a decline in weekly downloads early in the quarter, bottoming out at about 27.8K in mid-November. However, a slight recovery was observed towards the end of December, with downloads rising to 30.9K. Active users remained relatively stable, fluctuating around the 950K to 1M mark.

Viu: Dramas, TV Shows & Movies maintained a consistent revenue stream, with weekly earnings hovering between $2.1K and $3.1K. Downloads showed a downward trend, dropping from 30.9K at the start of the quarter to 13.4K by the end. Active users followed a similar trend, decreasing from 351K to 306K.

DStv had a mixed quarter in terms of downloads. After peaking at 36.5K in early November, downloads fell to around 21.1K by the last week of December. Active users showed minor fluctuations, ending the quarter with approximately 478K users.

MyDStv SA witnessed a decline in active users, from 52.1K at the start of the quarter to 45.9K by the end. Downloads also saw a decrease, starting at 17.5K and dropping to 13.1K by the last week of December.
